Note that the European Convention on Human Rights may affect how law is interpreted. If it is thought that a legal decision goes against the European Convention on Human Rights (see Human Rights Act 1998), there may be appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
There are seven main sources of law in England and Wales. These are as follows:
Delegated legislation, (including bye-laws) Case Law (Precedent) Custom Equity
Remember that different laws and systems of law apply in other countries! You may be subject to them if your writing appears there.
There may also be regulatory codes (such as police codes of practice, highway code) and regulations imposed by regulatory authorities (such as Civil Aviation Authority) and voluntary codes such as the D-Notice scheme observed by the media.
